Ethics in Consulting

Details about this class will be published at the beginning of October 2015, depending on the contract signed with the University of Bucharest.

Advertising Ethics

Is it moral to print a photo of a white woman sitting on a black woman transformed in a human chair on a magazine cover? Are ads that contain humour really harmless?  Or is there a limit in the use of humour in advertising? When does the use of female body in advertising ‘cross the line’? All these and many similar questions represent the basic form of what we call “moral thinking” or “moral reflection”, i.e., the ethical interrogation.

Most of the time, moral reflection is tacit; it does not involve a special intellectual effort nor a public discourse. All human beings, as long as their brains work in an unaltered way (by mental affections, drugs or any other internal or external factor),  question the morally of their own actions and those of others. A large percentage of these interrogations are not verbalized. Contrary to this mostly untrained and unsystematic morally reflection, the present course in “Advertising Ethics” will familiarize students with the mechanisms of moral decision-making and help them build a structured understanding of the moral phenomena and moral reflection. The whole purpose of this course is to develop and strengthen the ability of the students to make explicit moral judgments about situations related to the field of advertising. At the end of the course, the students shall be able to provide arguments for rejecting or accepting an ad or a campaign as being ethical. During the semester, the students will have to analyze and discuss extensively ads and advertising campaigns, as well as corporate or institutional communication strategies.
